Quilts bring back many fond memories of my childhood. My Grandmother was an avid quilter(and still quilts on occasion). She made quilts for everyone...her children, grandchildren, and friends. I STILL have the first quilt she made for me.
Quilting has changed so much over the years and from culture to culture.
While quilting can be traced back to ancient Egypt and China, it has a very rich American history. During the 1800's, women held Quilting Bees (or Quilting Parties). This started as a way for friends, family and neighbors to help an individual finish a quilt, it became a popular way for women to socialize. They could discuss family dilemmas, exciting news, trying times, their feelings on war, and many other topics.
Until I found Etsy, I thought the art of quilting had been lost. I live in an area where retail reigns supreme...and, for the most part, local stores are all chains.
I was thrilled to find that quilting is making a major comeback...or maybe it has been there all along, just out of my reach.
